The trustees have future plans to collaborate with South Lanarkshire Council to improve the park spaces next to Thankerton village hall. Both the Thancard Trust, the Community Council and other groups including T.I.G. (Thankerton Improvement Group) have for over a decade fought to see much requested re-designs for the large recreational area.
The outdated Children’s play equipment is currently uninspiring and many of the the grassy areas so boggy at times that it is no longer fit for purpose for many weeks each year.
We attempted to take over this park along with our village hall. The council remain determined to hold onto control of the play park, citing the complexities of running a public space like this and their own political preferences to retain it. The trustees will continue to push the council for improvements.
Watch this space!
Our current Council run play park is in desparate need of a proper re-design.
There is easily space for both a young children’s play area and a Community park for multi purpose recreational use. The MUGA pitch is in a woeful state, with broken asphalt and non useable tennis nets ( the council filled in the post holes in 2025 to hide a broken tennis post stand). We suspect the surface no longer complies to modern safety standards.
The trustees will continue to push for improvements, led by the South Lanarkshire Council, and remain open to a Community Asset Transfer of the space should they have a change of political heart.
